Do you know that people read your body language often vis-à-vis instinct without giving a lot of thought to it? This is because your pose and posture are a great source of information. In a glance, most people can decipher a great deal about your personality – whether you’re outgoing, aggressive, an introvert or relaxed. This is because body language can communicate a lot about you, probably better than what you speak. Have you ever thought about what your body language says about you? NO. You should!
1) Don’t fidget
A man who can’t stay still, is a man who is worried, stressed and less confident. Fidgeting is a clear indication of nervousness. In fact, its biggest offenders are your hands. While you can talk with your hand, make sure you keep the gesticulation calm and under control. Even when seated, avoid that leg-vibration thing that most guys do.
2) Stand up straight with your shoulders back
A tip which you’ve been hearing from time memorial – your mother has advised you, so has your teacher, and now we, too, are going reiterate the same. It can be very difficult, especially now when you have got into the habit of slouching a little, but get over it. Concentrate on pushing your shoulders back when standing or walking. You’ll be surprised to see how muchconfident the posture makes you look.
3) Firm handshakes
Don’t be that guy who extends a dead hand while introducing himself to the other person. There are only a few things worse than that. While shaking hand, grip the other person’s hand firmly and confidently. But, don’t get carried away too, don’t crush the other person’s hand or don’t hold onto too long. You run a risk of coming across as a creep.
4) Don’t cross your arms when socializing
Think of nightclub bouncers who stand with their arms crossed outside the gate. Do they look like someone you want to talk to, let alone work with? No, right? It’s because crossing your arms is a protective stance. We do it when we are on-guard or cold. So, relax and keep your arms uncrossed.
5) Keep your eyes forward
It’s one of the trickiest and most important method of showing confidence through body language. When you are walking by yourself, it only feels natural to slightly lower your head and watch your step, however, it communicates to others that you don’t want to engage in a conversation. Hence, always keep your chin up and your eyes forward, even when you’re walking on the road, alone.
6) Proper grooming
Sample this – you want to make a fabulous chicken recipe, but your chicken is stale, how on earth can you expect people to like your dish? It works the same way. Your body language might be spot on, but if you’re going to flaunt a four-day old scruff, unkempt beard and dirty hair, you’re going to make a bad impression. So, up your ante, invest time in grooming and don’t be afraid to try on new products that work for your skin and hair.
