A 2011 Ohio State study found that weight gain of about 20 pounds is average among people who get married (especially for women). After following newlyweds for four years, researchers found that the happier you are in the marriage, more the possibility of you gaining extra weight.
The research also highlighted that people often ape their partners, so the next time your wife tells you, “I am trying to lose weight for you”, understand what she means.
In another study published in ‘Obesity’ (2012), couples who have been married for two years or longer are more likely to gain weight than their single counterparts. According to USA Today, “Newly married women in their early 20s gain an average of 24 pounds in the first five years of marriage, and men in the same age group gain an average of 30 pounds during that same time, referencing that same study.”
#1 Influencing each others choices.
Once you are married, you step out for dinners and brunches occasionally, ignoring the part when you realise you can’t get in your clothes, after just three months of marriage. Eating out becomes a central activity and you tend to binge on every thing you like and what your partner likes.
#2 Holy Kitchen!
Our dedicated Indian women absolutely love to exhibit their culinary skills in order to impress their spouses and in-laws. So after experimenting all those food channels and whatsapp quick recipes and eating them graciously, babe you are bound to put on weight. Plus, women begin to put family’s eating preferences above their own.
Also if it is not a very happy marriage, partners turn to food for solace and so the weight gain.
#3 No Pressure.
One important reason for this weight gain is the relief of ‘finding a mate’ is over, so you slack off for a change and ‘I-am-married’ is the perfect excuse to put on kilos. According to a 2013 article published in Health Psychology, “Couples who are happy, satisfied and secure in their marriage are more likely to gain weight because they no longer feel any pressure to attract a mate.”
Researchers at Flinders University, in Adelaide, Australia, found women who dieted before their wedding put on ‘significantly’ more weight after marriage. Here the wedding day weight change could be because women have ‘snagged’ their man and no longer have motivation to diet. Once married you think your life is sorted, you don’t need to impress anyone any more.
#5 You get pregnant!
Pregnancy can be a bit of a double-whammy when it comes to weight gain. Women tend to overeat during pregnancy (of course for the bay’s growth and health) and become inactive. Also giving in to cravings increases junk food intake that leads to weight gain issues.
#6 Garbage disposal.
Women hate the sight of good food, or any food getting wasted. So either they do ‘I-spent-all-day-cooking-for-you-dude’ trick to force their husbands to eat that extra morsel, or end up eating any unfinished food themselves. Without realising that you are just making your family FAT!
